Equitel introduces 5G network to its users

Equitel has announced the introduction of 5G network to its users in Kenya making it the fourth mobile service provider to do so.

Equitel which is owned by Kenya’s largest bank by customer base Equity Bank, through its financial technology subsidiary, Finserve said its 5G network is now available in 370 locations in the country.

The rollout of the fifth generation network has been undertaken through collaboration with Airtel Kenya which is host mobile network operator.

The firm said the 5G launch builds on the success of the previous 4G rollout which has revolutionized the virtual telecommunications landscape.

This makes the telco the first successful MVNO to offer 5G services in Africa, ushering in a new era of lightning-fast connectivity for customers.

“This milestone will ensure faster and more reliable connectivity that empowers businesses, communities, and individuals, enabling them to actively engage in the digital economy,” Equitel said in a statement.

The locations include among others, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nairobi, Athi River, Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Eldoret, and Bungoma.

“In collaboration with the partner network, the 5G service will soon be extended to densely populated areas like residential neighborhoods, shopping centres and central business districts,” the mobile operator stated.

The launch is projected to strengthen its operations in mobile banking channel in Kenya, offering customers unparalleled convenience, accessibility, affordability, and ease of transacting through various banking channels.

Customers can send money from Equitel-to-Equitel lines for FREE as well as pay for goods and services through the One Equity Till Number at over 1 million merchants countrywide at no cost.

Finserve says it is similarly working with industry experts to ensure customers can access a variety of up-to-date content intended to address their everyday needs and therefore boost the quality of life.

“Equitel’s commitment to delivering superior connectivity experience is further underscored by the introduction of enticing data bundle offers for its customers. To mark this milestone, Equitel will offer a 100% bonus on data bundles every Wednesday and Friday.”

To enjoy Equitel 5G services, customers need to have a 5G capable device supported by a 4G-LTE SIM card. If a customer is still using a 3G SIM card, they are requested to visit their nearest Equity branch, where dedicated Equitel representatives will be on standby to assist with the seamless transition.

Equitel currently has over 1.5 million mobile data subscribers out of the 67 million mobile subscribers in Kenya.
