Makadara Law Court has freed two Nigerians arrested for murdering, decapitating, and dismembering the body of 20-year-old JKUAT student Rita Waeni in Roysambu last month.

Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi released William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbor pending the completion of investigations.

The court had on 31 January allowed the police to hold them for 21 days to collect DNA samples to match against the deceased’s. The results of the DNA test are not yet out. The police had also requested more time to analyse the suspects’ SIM cards, laptops, and mobile phones.

But when the matter came up in court on Thursday, the police informed the magistrate that investigations were concluded, save for the DNA test results. Through their lawyer Victor Obuli, the suspects requested the court release them and sought an order to release their phones. Principal Magistrate Mwangi acquiesced and directed the duo to report to the DCI every Wednesday, pending the outcome of the DNA tests. She also ordered the police to release their phones. The case will be mentioned on 14 March to ascertain the results of the DNA tests.
